Additional Learning Needs

At Ysgol Y Plas, we prioritise the individual needs of all learners, ensuring a diverse and tailored curriculum that fosters self-esteem and positivity.

We are dedicated to inclusive education, valuing every learner equally and providing a safe and supportive environment for all.

We collaborate with parents and children to determine appropriate adjustments and support, ensuring access to the curriculum at suitable levels for each child.

Support at Ysgol Y Plas can be categorised into three levels:

1. Universal Support

Provided within the classroom setting through differentiated work, aiming to meet the needs of the majority of learners.

2. Universal Targeted

Interventions and strategies are implemented for learners showing a lack of expected progress, often conducted by a TA in small groups or individually.

3. Additional Learning Provision

For children with identified ALN, a personalised Individual Development Plan is created and tailored to their needs. This may include access to an alternative learning provisions like the Nurture provision or offering a fully practical and a very well thoughout out differentiated curriculum.

More Able and Talented

We use a range of strategies to identify gifted and talented children. The identification process is ongoing, and begins when a child joins ours school. More Able and Talented (MAT) pupils are identified by class teachers as a result of assessments and observations. The learning opportunities that we provide for MAT pupils aim to enrich and extend the curriculum in order to further challenge and develop the pupil abilities in one or more areas.

Pupils with Disabilities

Our accessibility plan aims to: · Reduce and eliminate barriers to access the curriculum and to allow full participation in the school curriculum and community for pupils, and prospective pupils, with a disability.

Our accessibility plan for pupils with disabilities focuses on:

  • Removing barriers for accessing the curriculum and full participation in school life.

  • Acknowledging and respecting parents' insight into their child's disability while maintaining confidentiality.

  • Ensuring wheelchair accessibility throughout the school premises.

Looked After Children

We aim to ensure that all Looked After Children (LAC) have full access to appropriate education. We aim to maximise the educational achievements and enhance life opportunities for such children. We ensure there is effective liaison between ourselves, Conwy’s Education Department and Social Services in planning, developing and providing education for Looked After Children. Good quality Personal Education Plans are produced for Looked After Children who attend our school.
